3 Character Tutorial

We had to illustrate 3 characters using the cute, goofy, and screwball guidelines. I went ahead and had a little fun with  the first two and made a cute banana and a goofy zombie. The chicken screwball is pretty basic I guess.

In-Class Tutorial - Surrealism

We had to draw our classmates (who were posing at the front) using surrealism styles.

Below were the tutorials for cute, goofy, and screwball characters respectively.

Assignment 2 - Cubism

We had to illustrate 2 pages from a children's book using cubism styles.
The book I chose to illustrate is called "Juju the Almost Teddy Bear".

Cubism Tutorial

In this tutorial we were supposed to select an object from the children's book we selected for our next assignment however I must have misheard or forgotten and just picked any object. We were supposed to create various cubism-inspired thumbnails.

Assignment 1 - Expressionism

The reason this one has no mask and strings was because in the real one I used sticky tack to stick on the string and a small paper mask.

Another tutorial.

Messed up during the start because I thought the instructor said to only use shapes. Then I started using simple shapes which started ok but as I continued on I improved. The last three went downhill as well as we had to start using negative space to draw. Each sketch was based on each classmate posing in front of the class for 3 minutes.

Tutorial+Celebrity Caricature

In this tutorial we had to use "Liquify" in photoshop to exaggerate and distort a photo in order to make it into a caricature.

In this picture I made the nose, cheeks, and smile larger. There was an emphasis on the nose as it is very defined. The cheeks and smiles were also emphasized because he is always smiling which makes his cheeks really come out. It shows that he is a really happy and joyful person. I made his hands slightly larger to emphasize his martial arts background. His hair is also slightly larger because he always seems to have that hairstyle nowadays and it is always thick and volumed. Now don't take this a the wrong way but I also made his eyes slightly smaller. Not because he's asian though...It's ok I'm asian too so it's not that bad...is it?

For this picture I had to take the caricature above and create linework based on it. I used really bold and thick lines because to symbolize all the tough and bold feats Jackie always does, he always does his own stunts and the like after all. For both the hair and clothing I used a dry brush, however for the hair I smudged it around a bit to somewhat mirror the directions his hair is flowing. I blurred his hand and arm to mimic the original photo. Thick lines were basically used for outlining and thin lines for detailing.

P.S. Drawing/coloring with a mouse sucks. But it helps a little I guess as this tutorial is similar to woodblocking where it's pretty rough and all.

2nd Tutorial in Illustration Class

Told to use different brush strokes and colors according to what the music/sound made us feel. What direction and etc. Smudge+Blending was used.

1st Tutorial in Illustration Class

We explored ways to refresh artistic views when you are in a rut.
Drew several things using a reference.
1: Only used lines

2: View reference upside-down, used only lines.

3: Only used curved-lines.

4: Used only straight lines, holding the pencil differently - using the shoulder of the lead.

5: Only put down pencil during a time interval of "1-potato-2-potato-stop".

6: Like 5, but using "1-potato-stop".

All in all was a good tutorial, we went around the class and put a star on the two most liked drawing for each person's set of illustrations. I agree with my classmates that the 4th and 6th are the best ones I drew.
